NEW BOOK, NEW MESSAGE: FLUORIDE IS TOXIC!

Recently, author Carol Vander Stoep contacted me to let me know about her new book. Mouth Matters: Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body, Vander Stoep, an Austin-area registered dental hygenist, writes about mouth care and the intimate relationship between oral and whole-body health with all the authority of a 30-year practitioner. The book is eminently readable and full of good information, but what particularly stands out for me is the author's position on fluoride. She's against it, and has devoted 13 pages to fluoride toxicity, information she integrates into the text in a seamlessly effective way.
Vander Stoep, who for most of her career embraced fluoride, changed her mind in the course of researching the book and did a complete about face. Her approach to the hot-button issue is cautious -- understandable in view of the retaliation organized dentistry regularly visits on fluoride apostates, a retaliation she herself has not escaped. But any dental professional's public stance against fluoride takes courage. If it's true that honey catches more flies than vinegar, perhaps this quietly non-adversarial book will succeed in spreading its important message where other attempts have failed.
