THIS JUST IN: GERBER PRODUCES A NEW FLUORIDE FREE BABY WATER

NYSCOF (New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoride) has just called my attention to the fact that baby products giant Gerber is now marketng a fluoride free bottled water "because babies less than 6 months don't need fluoride." They've also introduced a fluoride free baby toothpaste touting "ingredients that are safe to swallow." Contrast this responsible attitude with Nursery Water brand, of which I wrote in my last entry. Not only does Nursery Water cynically advertise to customers unaware of the ADA's and CDC's warnings against fluoride for infants, but it doesn't even clame to be sterile. Indeed, its own label states that it isn't. Outrageous.
We can't know whether Gerber's new posture arises out of a genuine concern for babies or whether they've simply identified a profitable new market niche (which would be good in itself, underscoring a large and growing demand). But they've taken an important step forward, and for that we salute them.
