EARTH DAY 2010

Shamefully late though it is, I still want to say something about Austin's Earth Day Festival last month (April 21) at Triangle Square Park. The event, held concurrent with the park's regular Wednesday farmers' market, was the first of its kind for Fluoride Free Austin: an event bringing health- and environmentally-consciousAustinites together for an afternoon and evening of learning, organic foods, music and film. The weather was glorious if windy, and from our table - nestled cozily between Bat Conservation International and Texas Green Builders, we distributed flyers, played our power point (see www.fluoridefreeaustin.com, "handouts") and, most important of all, talked to dozens of people about the importance of putting an end to water fluoridation in our city. Not surprisingly - in view of the nature of our audience - many people were already aware of the toxic nature of the fluoridation chemicals so cavalierly dumped into our drinking water, and those who weren't proved very open to education on the subject. Among our visitors was a UT Daily Texan reporter named Alex Geiser who, after chatting for a while, managed to produce a fine story on a tight deadline.
Two of the major sponsors were the Wheatsville Food Co-Op (where, incidentally, we purchase our reverse-osmosis filtered water), and Austin Green Art, which handled the registration. From the latter I had pre-ordered a hand-painted banner, which arrived just in the nick of time. The design was hardly what I had anticipated!

It served nicely for the occasion, however. The day passed pleasantly and so quickly that I never had time to leave the table to check out the other exhibits. Next year! Linda Greene, Rob Love, and Mat Wood (editor of the Austin Free Press) did a great job of circulating, interfacing with the other vendors and handing out many more flyers. All in all a worthwhile day, and one we look forward to repeating in other venues.
