MEETING OF MARCH 22, 2011: DOWN TO THE WIRE

After  several weeks of incomplete and confusing information out of Council member Randi Shade's office, the official agenda  of this Tuesday's meeting was finally published this past Friday.  The following press release is based on that information plus a conversation the same day with Shade's policy aide.

The Austin City Council’s Committee on Public Health and Human Services has placed fluoride on the agenda of its next meeting:  Tuesday, March 22, in City Hall Chambers.   The meeting begins at 2:00 p.m.  Signup for general citizens communication opens at 1:45.  Arrive early and sign up for one of the ten available 3-minute speaking slots.

Our item is listed last on the agenda.  It will feature pro-fluoridation presentations by the usual suspects.  Professionals from Fluoride Free Austin:  dentists, physicians and Ph.D. scientists will have a half hour in which to respond.  Then, our opponents “from the community” will take their half hour turn. Since nobody from “the community” has arrived to speak in favor of fluoride in the two and a half years of Fluoride Free Austin’s existence, Shade’s office has actively sought “volunteers” through the dental and medical societies. This latest information is based on the agenda—not posted until Friday afternoon—and a conversation with the policy aide in charge on Friday.  It has been extremely difficult to get accurate information out of Shade’s office over the past several weeks.

We need a huge attendance for this first official airing of Austin’s water fluoridation issue in nearly 40 years.  Be there—whether you speak or not—and wear your yellow and blue anti-fluoride sticker proudly!   We’ll also have some creative signs available.  City hall is located at 301 W. Second Street, between Guadalupe and Lavaca.  Validated parking in the building’s underground garage can be accessed from the Lavaca side.

Also, don’t forget the Candidates Forum set for later the same evening, 6:30 p.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church, 6100 Berkman Drive.  Shade, Morrison—both PHHS committee members—and Chris Riley will all be there along with their challengers for re-election in May.  While we don’t recommend taking over this event (there are other issues), it will provide an opportunity to show them that we’re here—and we vote.

This is a huge step in the right direction. Haung is not any brighter but just as vocal. It is not easy to be patient with some who see committed to ignore data and accept policy statements as facts.
Good luck- I know it took lots of effort to get to this point. You got a great cast of PHD and MD types to speak.
Carmen is certainly top grade on his feet in response. I have not seen the others yet.
