FLUORIDE DATE LECTURE #45 - FLUORIDE FREE AUSTIN DEMANDS A WARNING ON AUSTIN WATER UTILITY BILLS

Good afternoon,  Mayor and council members.  Last May, Mosaic, the company that supplies the fluorosilicic acid Austin uses for water fluoridation, made a change to their Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for that chemical.  They added the following dire warning:

"Prolonged or repeated overexposure to fluoride compounds may cause fluorosis.  Fluorosis is characterized by skeletal changes, consisting of osteosclerosis (hardening or abnormal density of bone) and osteomalacia (softening of bones) and by mottled discoloration of the enamel of teeth (if exposure occurs during enamel formation).  Symptoms may include bone and joint pain and limited range of motion."

We've been telling you this for the better part of three years, and now here it is, straight from the producer.

In August, of last year, following a meeting we had with the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services director and his chief medical officer, the Austin Water Utility posted a weakly-worded warning - strictly limited to dental fluorosis in infants - on its website where no one will see it.

In light of this compelling new development, we now demand a stronger warning to be placed on the Austin water utility bill where everyone will see it.  It should be worded as follows:

"In January of 2011 the CDC lowered the maximum level of fluoride recommended for tap water from 1.2 ppm to 0.7 ppm*.  Austin currently fluoridates at 0.7 ppm.**  Prolonged or repeated overexposure to fluoride compounds may cause fluorosis.***  Fluorosis is characterized by skeletal changes, consisting of osteosclerosis and osteomalacia and by mottled discoloration of the enamel of teeth if exposure occurs during enamel formation of children and infants.

"If you are concerned about fluorosis in infants and in children, you can minimize exposure to fluoride by using non-fluoridated water for children and for reconstitution of infant formula."

We further demand a meaningful response from the Council regarding this matter within the next 30 days.  Thank you.

Excellent work!! I wonder if other suppliers of fluorosilicic acid are also adding such warnings on their MSDS sheets. Water departments are in such a liable position by using this material and not sharing the real scoop with the customers.

Here’s an excellent Peer Reviewed study about fluorosis and kidney/liver damage in children: Xiong X, et al. (2007). Dose-effect relationship between drinking water fluoride levels and damage to liver and kidney functions in children. Environmental Research Jul 8.

This study shows that fluoride levels at ½ the concentration deemed safe by the EPA can cause damage to liver and kidney functions in children. This study also determined dental fluorosis caused by the fluoride is directly linked to kidney damage in children. Re-read that last sentence. Remember 40% of our teenagers have dental fluorosis . . . do they also have kidney damage?

Great win to get the bigger admission of risk. Now if the citizens were only aware. Due dilligence seems to require the city to give informed consent of this known risk. This risk is now on the record as fact per MSDS. Go to James Robert Deal attorney and his fluoride class action site. He is actively assisting cities being warned and putting them on notice of fluoridation risks to citizens. Just copy what he has done and he is actively speaking at his city Commission with others now. His website is helpful and he gives great detail in his notices of intent to litigate. More attorneys are needed to assist Pro Bono as Deal has. He is actually the one pushing the issue in his state of Washington along with Dr. Osmunson DDS MPH. They have been asking the state the tough questions and behind lawsuits over regulations of poisons and drug status of fluorides in fluoridation. Austin is providing hope for many. Government does so little to actually serve the people all too often.

Yes, James is doing a wonderful job, and I help where I can by providing him with documents and articles (like the MSDS sheet). He is a shining example to us all.  I've been thinking along "informed consent" lines too, recently.  The MSDS sheet certainly helps.

James Robert Deal at Fluoride Class action will be Talking to Seattle monday. He is giving their a detailed warning of the risks and litigation potential for many damages and showing documentation links to flesh out each claim. Austin might benefit greatly when insurance providers are asked if Austin will be covered for these lawsuits. Mr Deal wants others to use his templates just changing the city name etc as needed. A local attorney letter head Pro Bono is even better if they will assist.
